What You Need to Know About Hair Toupees

If you’re looking into the world of hair replacements, you’re at the right place! That’s because the first step in the hair replacement process is choosing the best system for the coverage needed.
However, since different types of hair replacement options such as a “wig,” “hairpiece,” and “toupee” are often used interchangeably, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them and even harder to know which system may be best for you.

Not to worry – here’s a brief explanation of what the common toupee for men is, the essential information you need about toupees and where you can find a hair specialist doctor for a hair loss consultation!

What Is A Toupee?
Simply put, a toupee is a type of hairpiece. In general, hairpieces are specially-made hair replacement solutions for different types of coverage.

Hence, hair extensions, bangs, custom-made hair systems and toupees all fall into the hairpiece category!
Now that we’ve established that a toupee is a type of hairpiece, what makes them unique? Well, toupees are unique in that they specialize in covering bald spots. They are partial or smaller hairpieces that are usually secured to the scalp with the use of tape, liquid bonding adhesive, or metal clips depending on the type of toupee in Singapore.
As they are made to cover bald spots, they have to match the wearer’s natural hair. Like most hairpieces, you can wear them for extended periods of time. Depending on the quality of the toupee and the attachment method, you can even exercise, shower and sleep while wearing one!
Also, toupees aren’t just for men! In fact, top-of-the-head toupees are common among many women as well. They’re often designed to cover the crown area where hair thinning occurs the most often!
What Is A Toupee Made From?
Toupees and other partial hairpieces can be made from a wide range of different materials. Some toupee hairpieces are made of synthetic materials, such as nylon, while others are made with real human hair!
Today, most modern toupees or hair systems are custom-made to the needs of the wearer. The manufacturing of toupees is usually done by hand by an expert hairpiece maker!

However, there are plenty of more affordable toupee manufacturers out there that produce toupee via machine.
The difference between a hand-made hair toupee and a manufactured toupee is the quality of the hair itself and the sense of realness that only a skilled craftsman can produce!
How Do You Maintain and Take Care of a Toupee?
Once you’ve set your mind on using a toupee, it should come as no surprise that toupee maintenance, cleaning and conditioning routine will make the biggest difference in the look and durability of the toupee!
Here’s what you should be doing to keep your toupee, especially for men, in good shape:
  1. Use the right products – about once a week, wash your hairpiece or toupee using the recommended shampoo. If you didn’t receive any recommendations, we suggest using salon quality, pH neutral shampoos and conditioners with moisturizing qualities. Avoid products with alcohol. Also, be sure to clean the toupee’s underside (that lies on your skin) with a gentle application of antibacterial soap.
  2. Be gentle. Any tangles should be brushed out before wetting your hairpiece. Be sure to only use a wide tooth, soft edged comb and when you’re washing, use lukewarm water. Gently massage cleansers and conditioners into the hairpiece, but don’t leave it to soak.
  3. When you’re finished washing your hairpiece, don’t squeeze or twist it to get the excess water out. Rather use a towel wrap, but take care not to rub your hairpiece.
  4. Give it time and let your hairpiece or toupee air dry. To keep it in shape, it’s best to do this using a mannequin or styrofoam head.
  5. Avoid using styling products, but if you must, keep these products concentrated at the ends of the hairpiece or toupee.
What’s the Difference Between a Toupee and a Wig?
Firstly, the use of a wig and a toupee is very different. A wig is meant to cover the full head entirely whether the wearer has hair or not instead of covering a bald patch with a toupee!
A wig can also be taken off easily and doesn’t need any special glues to hold it in place. In fact, wigs are generally elasticised and will hold firmly on the wearer comfortably.
As a toupee is used to cover a bald spot on the wearer’s head, it’s often secured with a special adhesive that’s applied to hold the toupee in place. A good toupee needs to be fitted by a specialist to integrate the toupee with the wearer’s own hair!
Usually, the wearer will need to go back to the stylist to have it removed as well.  If you don’t want to apply the toupee with glue, it can be attached with clips but it may not be as secure as if the adhesive is used.
Also, caring for a wig or a toupee will require special shampoo and conditioner formulated for wigs and toupees.  The only difference would be that you can take your wig off and wash it carefully, while a toupee can be washed while you’re wearing it securely.
Whether you choose a toupee or a wig is a personal preference.  Both can look as natural and fabulous as you wish while giving you a boost of confidence in your appearance!
