Grey hair systems, and where most brands get it wrong

If you're shopping for a hair system in your 40s or 50s, grey is probably the part you're most worried about. Understandably. It's also the part most brands handle worst.

By that age your hair isn't one colour anymore. Maybe there's silver creeping in at the temples, maybe you're well into salt-and-pepper. Either way, a flat single-shade unit won't match it. You step outside, daylight hits, and everyone can tell.

We've spent years on exactly this at LYRICAL HAIR. Here's how we handle it, including the part most companies don't mention.

Why human grey hair has a shelf life

Real human hair that contains grey doesn't age well in storage. Leave it in a warehouse long enough and it starts to yellow. Slowly at first, then it's obvious.

That matters more than it sounds. A unit that was a perfect salt-and-pepper match the week it was made can go brassy and dull after six months sitting in a box. The product didn't change. Storage did.

So most brands keep very little human grey in stock. It's a bad inventory bet, and they know it. Some skip grey altogether. Others carry a couple of token blends and hope you don't look too closely.

We went the other direction.

Our stock grey is synthetic, and here's why

Most of the grey units in our warehouse use synthetic grey fibre. Please don't close the tab. This isn't the shiny stuff from a cheap wig.

For grey blending specifically, synthetic has genuine advantages. It doesn't yellow, so a unit made today looks the same as one made eight months ago. The colour holds consistently batch to batch. And it blends into the human hair around it instead of sitting there flat and dead.

Those properties are the reason we can stock grey at all. We keep 48,000 grey-blend units on the shelf, running from 5% grey up to 90%. Whatever your hair is doing at 45, 55, or 65, there should be something that disappears into it rather than sitting on top of it.

Custom orders: real human grey and yak grey

If you want actual human grey hair, we make those too.

Custom orders are available in 100% human grey. We also do yak grey, which is our premium option. Yak hair has a naturally grey tone and a texture that sits very well alongside human hair.

Both are made to order, and both ship in about 40 days from confirmation. Most companies in this industry quote two to three months for anything custom. We manage it faster because we own the factory. There's no middleman, no waiting on someone else's production schedule. Your order goes straight to the floor.

Pick your percentage, 5 to 90

You tell us how much grey you need.

Around 5% if you've just started noticing a few silver strands at the temples. 20 or 30% for the gradual salt-and-pepper stage. Half and half at 50%. Then 70, 80, 90% once grey has mostly taken over and only some of your original colour is hanging on.

Any point on that scale, we match it.

Why we bother

Most brands treat grey as a rounding error. They stock a handful of shades, and when your hair lands between two of them you get told to pick the closest one and hope. That doesn't work, because grey doesn't arrive in blocks. It has to fade gradually out of your own colour, or you end up with a silver plate bolted onto your head.

We built our inventory around that instead of around what's convenient to store. 124 colours. 48,000 grey-blend units ready to ship, every step from 5% to 90%. And a custom service that delivers real human grey or yak grey in 40 days.

Getting started

Not sure what percentage you need? Email us a photo. Take it in daylight, not under a bathroom light, which will lie to both of us. We'll look at it and tell you what we'd pick. Colour matching over email costs nothing.

If you want a custom human grey or yak grey system, we'll go through the options with you first, then put it into production. Forty days from confirmation to your door.

Get the grey right and nobody gives your hair a second look.
