Grey hair systems: why the match matters more than the base

Spend five minutes on any hair system forum and you'll see the same debate over and over: lace or skin, thin or durable, breathable or waterproof. The base gets all the attention, and I get why. It decides how the thing feels on your head and how many months you get out of it.

But bases don't give you away. Colour does. And once you're past 40, colour means grey.

Most brands are bad at this. You get six or seven shades, an instruction to pick the closest one, and good luck if your hair sits between two of them. A little silver at the temples, a full salt-and-pepper, anything in the middle, you end up guessing. And the guess is usually visible.

We stock what we stock because of that exact problem.

Why human grey is a pain to keep in stock

Here's the part nobody in this industry advertises: grey human hair doesn't age well in a box.

It yellows. Six months on a shelf and the silver starts reading brassy, the tone shifts half a shade, and a unit that was a perfect match on the day it was made arrives looking slightly off. Not wrong enough to send back. Wrong enough that you notice it in the mirror every morning.

That's why so few brands carry much of it. They either don't offer human grey at all, or they keep a narrow range and quietly hope the lighting is forgiving.

What we keep on the shelf: synthetic grey

Since human grey won't sit still, most of the grey units in our warehouse use synthetic grey fiber.

I know, synthetic has a reputation. It's earned, in the context of a cheap costume wig. For grey blending it's a different conversation. Synthetic doesn't yellow, it holds the same tone batch after batch, and it sits well next to the human hair in the rest of the unit, which is the only test that actually matters.

That decision is also the reason we can hold 48,000 grey-blend units in stock at all. The range runs from 5% grey, which is a few silver strands, all the way to 90% for a head that's gone mostly grey.

What we make to order

If you want the real thing, we'll make it.

Two options: 100% human grey hair, or yak grey. Yak comes from yak hair, it has a natural grey tone, and the texture disappears into human hair. It's our premium option, and honestly it's the one I'd push you toward if blending at the hairline is your main worry.

Both are made to order, so nothing sits in a warehouse losing its colour. Both ship in about 40 days. That's the part worth repeating: the industry standard for custom work is two to three months, and we do it in 40 because we own the factory. The order goes straight to the production floor.

The percentages

5% — a few silver strands coming in
10 / 20 / 30% — gradual salt-and-pepper
50% — even mix
70 / 80 / 90% — mostly grey

Anything in between, just tell us.

Getting started

If you're not sure which percentage you need, send us a photo of your hair in daylight. Not the bathroom, not a warm overhead bulb. Actual daylight. We'll tell you which one to order, and it costs nothing to ask.
