Installing Your Hair System at Home

The first time is the worst. Products spread across the counter, a mirror propped up somewhere awkward, and the feeling that you're about to wreck something expensive. It gets easier fast. After three or four goes most guys have the whole thing down to fifteen minutes, usually while half-watching something on their phone.

Here's the version I'd walk someone through.

What you need

Get everything out before you start, because there's no good way to hunt for a cotton swab with glue on your fingers.

  • Hair system
  • Adhesive or tape
  • Adhesive remover
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Scalp protector
  • Mirror
  • Scissors
  • Comb
  • Something to park the system on, like a mannequin head or a stand

Step 1: Get the old one off

Spray remover along the edges, then wait. Give it a minute. The solvent needs time to actually break the glue down, and that minute is what saves your base.

Lift an edge and work your way around, gently. If a section resists, spray more remover and wait again. Forcing it is how lace tears and how you end up with a sore, red scalp.

Set the old system on your stand.

Step 2: Clean your scalp

The bond is only as good as the surface under it. Oil, sweat, yesterday's adhesive: all of it shortens how long the new install lasts.

Wipe the area with remover to get the residue off, then go over it with an alcohol pad to strip the oils.

Wait until it's completely dry. Not mostly dry. If there's dampness left you're bonding to alcohol instead of skin.

Step 3: Prep the system

While your scalp dries, deal with the unit.

Tape goes on now. Press it down firmly onto the base and set the system aside. Liquid adhesive goes on your scalp rather than the system, so there's nothing to do on that front yet.

Give the hair a gentle brush and pick off anything loose.

Step 4: Scalp protector

Optional, but I'd do it. It's a thin barrier between your skin and the glue, which means less irritation and a much easier removal later. Costs you ninety seconds.

One thin layer over the area the system will cover. Let it dry for a minute or two.

Step 5: Adhesive

Tape users can skip ahead, it's already on the base.

For liquid: a thin, even layer on your scalp, brushed on or smoothed with a fingertip. Concentrate on the perimeter, since that's where the bond has to hold. Thin beats thick here. A heavy layer stays soft underneath and lets go early.

Now wait. The adhesive is ready when it's gone clear: not white, not wet-looking. A few minutes, longer in humidity. Putting the system down too soon is the most common reason a fresh install fails on day two, so this isn't the step to shortcut.

Step 6: Position it

This is the part that takes practice, and it's the part that decides whether you look like yourself.

Hold the unit by the edges, line the front hairline up with where you want it to sit, and lower it slowly.

Don't press yet. Look in the mirror. Centered? Not riding too high, not creeping down onto your forehead? Fix it now, while it can still move.

Step 7: Press it down

Start at the front and work back, pressing along the edges and holding each section for a couple of seconds. You want the base flat against the skin, no bubbles, no wrinkles.

Firm is enough. Leaning on it with your whole palm doesn't help, and it can squeeze adhesive out past the edge.

Step 8: Check the edges

Run a finger around the perimeter. Anything lifting goes back down. If a spot won't stay, dab a little adhesive there and hold it.

Step 9: Style

Brush it into shape, add product if that's your thing. Keep it simple for the first few installs. Styling is its own skill and you don't want to be learning it while the bond is still setting.

Things that make it easier

Shave close. Stubble leaves an uneven surface and the bond lets go sooner.

Thin adhesive, always.

Let it dry fully. Wet adhesive doesn't bond, it just slides.

Good lighting. Most of the mistakes you'd otherwise discover at lunch are visible under decent bathroom light, if you actually look.

Carry a small kit: adhesive, comb, mirror. If an edge shifts mid-day you can sort it out in two minutes.

What goes wrong, and why

Rushing the removal. Pulling the system off damages the base and your skin.

Skipping the alcohol wipe. Oils are the usual culprit behind a bond that dies in three days.

Installing before the adhesive is ready. It'll feel fine for an hour, then it won't.

Pressing too hard. Firm, not forceful.

If you get stuck

Every LYRICAL HAIR system ships with instructions, and if it's your first time we'll talk you through it. Installs go wrong in predictable ways and most of them are fixable in one phone call.

One last thing

Clean scalp. Prep the unit. Thin adhesive. Wait for tacky. Position carefully. Press down. Check the edges.

The first install will take you an hour. The fourth will take fifteen minutes, and somewhere around there you'll stop thinking about it at all.
