When to replace your hair system

Nobody wants to think about this. You've finally got a system you like — it looks good, it's comfortable — and the last thing you feel like doing is spending another chunk of money on a new one.

But they don't last forever, and they don't fail all at once either. They wear down slowly, which is the genuinely annoying part. The change is gradual enough that you stop noticing it. Then someone takes a photo of you at a bad angle and you realise the front has been thinning for two months.

So here's how to tell.

How long they actually last

Depends almost entirely on how you wear it.

  • Daily wear, looked after properly: three to six months for a quality unit. Some people get more out of one, plenty get less.
  • Rotating between two: six to nine months each, because each one gets a break.
  • Occasional wear only: a year or more. Sometimes much more.

That's a wide spread. The things that move it:

The unit itself. Remy human hair on a well-built base outlasts a cheap one, and it's not close. Less shedding, the base holds its shape, the colour stays put.

How often it's on your head. Daily wear is just more wear. There's no way around that.

How you treat it. Wash it properly, condition it, don't manhandle it, and it lasts. Scrub it, drag a brush through it, sleep in it every night, and it doesn't.

Your life. Heavy sweating, daily training, a hot climate — all of it shortens the clock. Desk job, air conditioning, and it stretches out.

Base material. Thin skin resists tearing but creases if you're careless with it. Lace breathes and gives you the best hairline, and it's also the easiest to put a hole in. Hybrid sits in the middle.

The signs

A system tells you when it's on the way out. What to look for:

It's shedding more. More strands in the brush, more in the sink. Some shedding is always normal — what matters is the change. A unit losing noticeably more in month five than it did in month one is on its way down.

The hair stays dry whatever you do. Conditioner doesn't rescue it anymore. It tangles, it looks dull, the ends feel like straw.

The base is damaged. Creases in poly, tears or thin patches in lace. None of that repairs properly. Once the base goes, the unit is finished.

The colour has drifted. Sun, washing and product all take a toll over months. If it no longer matches your sides the way it used to, that's the fade showing up.

The hairline has stopped looking like a hairline. Knot tension loosens, density thins out, the edge won't sit flat. This is usually the thing other people register first, even if they couldn't tell you what they're seeing.

Glue stops holding. Fresh application, same routine, and the bond lets go early. That's often the base degrading, not the adhesive.

What happens if you push it

Past its prime, it stops being only a looks problem.

Tangles get worse. A worn base can start irritating your scalp. And once the adhesive isn't holding properly, the whole thing can lift at exactly the wrong moment.

A tired system also just looks tired. People probably won't clock it as a hairpiece. They'll register that something about you looks slightly off, and they won't say anything.

Getting more months out of it

Own two. This isn't a sales pitch — rotating is genuinely the single biggest difference you can make. Each one gets to rest and dry out fully between wears instead of going straight back on damp.

Take it off at night. Your scalp gets air, the system dries, and you skip the moisture damage and creases that come from sleeping in it.

Wash it properly. System-safe shampoo, cool water, no scrubbing.

Condition it. Human hair needs moisture. Dry hair tangles and snaps.

Store it on a stand. Not folded, not shoved in a drawer.

Go easy coming off. Adhesive remover, then patience. Don't pull.

Don't get caught without one

Order before you need it. If yours reliably lasts four months, order at three. Then the replacement is sitting in a drawer when the old one finally gives up, and you're not making a panicked decision while wearing a thinning hairline.

Rotating sidesteps the whole problem — one of them is always in decent shape.

What we do at Lyrical Hair

Remy hair with the cuticles aligned, double-injected or double-knotted to cut down on shedding, and hairlines built with graduated density. Care instructions go in the box with every order, and they're worth actually reading.

Short version

Three to six months for daily wear. Longer if you rotate, longer still if you only wear it occasionally.

Watch for shedding, dryness, base damage, colour drift, and a hairline that's stopped looking real. Order the next one before the current one is finished, not after.
