How to choose toupee density (and avoid the helmet look

Density is the detail most first-time buyers get wrong. Not base material, not color, not even the hairline. Density.

hair piece for men

It just means how much hair gets knotted onto the base. Too much and the piece sits thick and obviously fake; too little and you can see scalp straight through the area you were trying to cover. The right amount depends on the hair you still have, your age, and how much time you want to spend styling it each morning. Mostly it depends on that first one.

Here's the rule I give people: match the thinnest hair beside the piece, not the thickest. If your temples are sparse, a dense top will look wrong even when every strand is perfectly color-matched. And almost nobody wears 120% density convincingly at 55.

Light, 80% to 100%. Best for mature clients or anyone with visibly thinning hair. It reads as hair that is thinning naturally, which is what it is. Most men over fifty should be shopping here.

Medium, 100% to 120%. Our most popular range by a wide margin. Enough fullness to style, light enough that you forget you're wearing it.

Heavy, 120% and up. Younger clients, or anyone who wants back the thick hair they had at 25. It photographs beautifully. It also needs more upkeep and more styling time, and that's the part people underestimate.

One thing worth knowing before you pick a number: density and hair quality aren't separate decisions. Dense hair that has been badly processed looks like a costume. We run a one-hour cuticle removal treatment on every batch of human hair, which keeps it soft and stops it developing that dry, plastic sheen after ten washes. It also means the hairline can be finished with properly bleached knots, so the edge holds up even when someone is standing close.

If you're blending with grey, we stock ratios from 5% to 90%, with roughly 45,000 units containing grey hair on the shelves and 124 colors in total. The small bases ship from stock in 5x7, 6x8, 7x9, 7x10 and 8x10, so there's usually something close to your measurements sitting in a box. Our US store ships directly, which trims weeks off the wait compared to ordering out of Qingdao.

hair piece for men

Nothing in stock fits? We take custom orders one-on-one for unusual density, base and color requests.

If you're torn between two densities, take the lighter one. You can always go denser on the next hair piece. You can't thin one out once it's tied.
