# Skin, Lace or Mono? Picking the Right Base for Your Men's Hair System

# Skin, Lace or Mono? Picking the Right Base for Your Men's Hair System

The base material is what you'll actually live with every day, so it's worth getting right. There's a trade-off between realism, comfort, and durability — you can usually get two of the three, but not all at once. Here's what you need to know about skin (PU), lace, and monofilament (mono) bases before you buy.

Skin bases are transparent polyurethane. The ultra-thin stuff (0.02–0.03 mm) gives you a hairline that's basically invisible, thanks to V-loop knots — but it tears easily and you're looking at 3–4 weeks of wear. The 0.06–0.08 mm version is what most people go with: decent realism, holds up to daily use for about 2–3 months. Thicker 0.10 mm+ skin is tough as nails, but the edge is visible, so it only works if your hairstyle covers the forehead. Skin is easy to clean, though it doesn't breathe well.

Lace bases come in French Lace and the finer Swiss Lace. Hair gets hand-tied onto a woven mesh, and bleached knots make the hairline disappear. This is what you want if you run hot or sweat heavily — the mesh lets air through. French Lace is the all-rounder. Swiss Lace is softer and harder to detect, but it doesn't last as long. The downside: cleaning adhesive out of open mesh takes patience.

Mono bases are rigid monofilament mesh. They're the durability pick — 6 to 12 months of wear — and they handle high density (up to 160%) without issue. The trade-off is that the thicker mesh is more visible at the front hairline, so mono usually goes on the crown, often paired with poly or lace around the edges.

Hybrid bases try to fix what each material gets wrong: lace up front for a natural hairline, mono or lace on top for airflow, and skin around the perimeter so tape peels off clean. If you're not sure what to get, a hybrid is a safe bet.
