Stock vs custom men's hair systems: how salons and individual buyers make smart supplier choices

If you've spent any time shopping for men's hair systems, you've probably run into the same problem: everything looks the same on the supplier's website. DTC brands with slick landing pages, nice photos, and promises that all sound vaguely identical. The hard part is figuring out who actually makes the product versus who's just reselling it.

There are really only two ways to buy: stock units and custom orders. And the supplier you should pick for one isn't necessarily the supplier you should pick for the other. They're different games with different rules.

For speed, go stock. Units from our overseas warehouses can show up in 1-5 business days. Salon owners tend to prefer this route for restocking popular textures and base types. No surprises, no waiting, just reorder what works.

If you need something specific, go custom. Base dimensions that aren't standard. Hair density that's lighter or heavier than off-the-shelf. A curl pattern you can't find in stock. That's where custom ordering makes sense. Expect 4-6 weeks for production.

A few things to check before you commit to any hair system supplier:

Stock buyers: ask to see real-time inventory photos or a warehouse video. If they can't produce one, they probably don't have the stock they claim to. Also ask for an actual shipping timeline with tracking history from previous orders—not just a promise.

Custom buyers: the knot work is where everything falls apart if the factory cuts corners. Ask for close-up photos of bleached knots on their recent orders. Ask about consistency across batches. A supplier who gets defensive about these questions is not the supplier you want.

You can go either route. What matters is knowing who's on the other end of the transaction. Buying from a manufacturer means you skip the middleman markup and you talk to the people who actually build the product. That tends to work out better than rolling the dice on a reseller.
