Can You Shower with Your Hair System On?
If you wear a hair replacement system, you might wonder whether you can shower with it on. The short answer is yes, you can. Modern hair systems—whether full poly skin or lace—are designed for daily wear, including showering, sleeping, and exercising.
However, washing a hair system requires a different approach than washing natural hair, as hairpiece fibers do not receive natural scalp oils. Here is what you need to know to maintain your unit.

Essential Rules for Showering with a Hair System
1. Use Lukewarm Water
Hot water can break down adhesives (tape or glue) and strip moisture from human hair, making it dry and frizzy. Always use lukewarm or cool water.
2. Choose the Right Products
Avoid standard shampoos containing sulfates, parabens, or alcohol. Use sulfate-free, hydrating shampoos and conditioners designed for hairpieces or color-treated hair.
3. Wash in One Direction
Do not rub or massage your hair in circular motions, as this causes severe tangling and shedding. Always smooth products downward—from the roots to the ends.
4. Keep Conditioner Away from the Base
Apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends. Applying conditioner directly to the base can loosen the knots or weaken the adhesive bond.
Step-by-Step Washing Routine
-
Detangle: Gently comb out any tangles with a wide-tooth comb before getting the hair wet.
-
Rinse: Let lukewarm water flow over your head in the direction of the hair style.
-
Shampoo: Smooth a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo through the hair from front to back. Rinse thoroughly.
-
Condition: Apply conditioner to the ends, avoid the base, leave it on for 2–3 minutes, and rinse with cool water.
-
Dry: Gently pat the hair with a microfiber towel. Do not rub.
Recommended Washing Frequency
You do not need to wash your hair system every day. Washing it 1 to 2 times a week is sufficient. On non-wash days, use a shower cap or keep your head out of the direct water stream to prolong the lifespan of the hair and base.
